Siem Reap’s hippest independent hotel and the temple town’s most accomplished independent spa have joined forces to bring outstanding wellness and relaxation experiences to holiday-makers in Cambodia.

With a beautiful, fresh and luxurious design to match the mid-century tropical decor of Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel’s existing facilities, the new Lemongrass Garden Spa at Baby Elephant becomes part of the hotel’s expanding list of top-quality guest services.

“We’re excited to be partnering with Lemongrass Garden. We have enjoyed their services personally, and we look forward to offering our guests the best massages and wellness treatments in town. With regular yoga classes, vegan cuisine and lots of healthy options to be enjoyed in our gorgeous hotel grounds, Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel is the perfect destination for retreat and wellness travellers,” Baby Elephant’s Marketing Director Ilana Tulloch said.

The Lemongrass Garden Spa at Baby Elephant facility is set at the back of the hotel, in a tranquil area surrounded by fragrant flowers and an organic edible garden. It will offer a wide range of rejuvenating treatments including massage, facials and more, all using natural, predominantly vegan treatments.

Spa directors Daniel Venn and Borey Bunhang have a shared 16 years of experience in wellness, and have provided beauty and massage to more than 70,000 satisfied customers in Siem Reap.

“We are so excited to work alongside the superb Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel, which shares our values and work ethic,” says Daniel. “It feels like the right direction as we begin to focus more on healthy lifestyle choices and customer wellness; Baby Elephant is just the perfect match. We cannot wait to see what fresh ideas this collaboration will produce.”

Siem Reap is undergoing rapid changes, with exciting new ideas and innovations emerging across segments, creating enriching opportunities and experiences for travellers keen on immersing themselves in Cambodia’s culture, food, and more. Wellness and retreat travellers are looking to our magical little temple town as an alternative destination to Cambodia’s increasingly expensive neighbours.

Siem Reap is only six kilometres from TripAdvisor’s most popular landmark, Angkor Wat. While in the past the town has been seen as a bucket-list destination, international travellers are now drawn back to the town’s magical personality, and the smorgasbord of opportunities to experience the soul of Cambodia and to enjoy the amazing value and quality on offer in hospitality, tourism and wellness.

Lemongrass Garden Spa and Baby Elephant are both renowned for their commitment to staff wellbeing and the creation of employment, training and job opportunities, enabling staff to rise out of poverty and become exceptional hospitality and wellness industry professionals.

Cambodia is one of the poorest nations in Southeast Asia, but when tourists choose to spend their money with tourism organisations that operate ethically, communities truly benefit.

Gin Cocktail Event | Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel

Despite gin fever unabashedly sweeping the region, Siem Reap has yet to fully catch on. Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel is now raising the bar by hosting the tourist town’s first regular gin-tasting popups. For its  second instalment, the Baby Elephant Gin Appreciation Society welcomes Annemarie, Cambodia’s premier mixologist, to showcase a selection of her work in the hotel’s lush tropical garden environment.

Annemarie is renowned for her international accolades as a bar manager and owner, educator, brand ambassador, event coordinator, bar consultant, and competition judge, all the way from the United States to Southeast Asia. She is one of a new breed of young international entrepreneurs sweeping into Cambodia, also among them mural artist Tamara Venn (of east London fashion notoriety, and whose work appears at the hotel), and Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel partners Ilana Tulloch and Adam Scott, whose previous exploits include Slam Dunk Sandwich Co., a vegan sandwich and burger bar in Jakarta, Indonesia.  Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel has similarly shot onto the hospitality scene in Siem Reap, maintaining a top-five position in the town’s TripAdvisor rankings, largely thanks to a relentless commitment to excellent food, drinks and guest service.

“Despite being a relative newcomer to the hotel scene in Siem Reap, we continue to provide some of the town’s very best food and service – both Cambodian and international,” says Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel’s managing partner and marketing director Ilana Tulloch.

“To attract someone of Annemarie’s calibre is testament to the brand we have been working hard to build, and we’are thrilled to be able to join our guests and community in welcoming her,” Ilana adds.

The Gin Appreciation Society meets at 7pm sharp, allowing attendees to embark on this journey of the palate together, sharing experiences as they explore. A a special menu will be on offer, including a range of gin cocktails and Khmer and international finger foods. The hotel’s regular cocktail and wine list will also be available.

Numbers for the event are strictly limited, and reservations (by e-mail to bookings@babyelephant.asia) are essential.

Shambhu shows how beer yoga is done at Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel | Siem Reap

Beer yoga is not just for Berlin hipsters – now Cambodia can give it a go, too! It is a style of yoga that is for everyone: open-minded yogis, yoga beginners and beer lovers of all skill levels will find something to love.

This innovative form of yoga involves gentle asanas, unusual mantras, and a focus on the cool, crisp taste of beer. It encourages participants to perform gentle stretches and some strength and balance postures, before relaxing into meditation while the sun sets over Siem Reap, a popular destination renowned among tourists and travellers for its sacred, majestic temples including the infamous Angkor Wat. The town is a magnet for yogis looking to harness its buzzing energy and revitalising zen.

Beer yoga is fun, but it’s no joke. Since beer yoga began to emerge at the forefront of popular culture, the movement’s Berlin-based founder Jhula has said she believes  participants will thoroughly enjoy and benefit from the practice.

“We take the philosophies of yoga and pair it with the pleasure of beer-drinking to reach your highest level of consciousness,” she has told the media.

Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel’s yoga master Shambhu is an Italian yoga instructor with more than 700 hours of yoga teaching experience, predominantly in traditional Indian ashrams. He has opened his mind and his practice to include beer yoga, creating a class that encapsulates its core philosophies.

“Beer yoga is for everyone,” says Shambhu. “Sure, it is not yoga in the traditional sense, but it offers an opportunity to relax and have some fun on the mat in a new way. We hope that it might also help introduce yoga practice to those who haven’t had an opportunity to try it out.”

Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel’s managing partner and marketing director Ilana Tulloch adds: “Beer yoga is bound to create some ripples in the wellness community. But our experience testing it out has been fun and relaxing. Our beautiful  open-air rooftop provides the perfect setting to enjoy a Saturday afternoon beer and a laugh while doing some simple asanas.”

At Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel, we provide a dynamic environment for our guests and community, which involves trying new things and providing balance – with an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle, but without letting go of fun.”

Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel also offers regular traditional yoga and meditation classes throughout the week, open to hotel residents as well as outside visitors, expats and locals.

The first class will be held on the Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel rooftop terrace this Saturday at 5pm. Class fee is $6.00 which includes a refreshing can of beer and use of mat.

Children in developing countries like Cambodia can often be exposed to abuse and exploitation, and some adopt risky behaviours in order to survive. ChildSafe certification is a valuable tool in helping to prevent exploitation and improve the lives of Cambodian children.

“We stand committed as a team to improving the lives of children, so we’re very proud that our staff are all ChildSafe certified,” says Baby Elephant CEO Carmel Tulloch. “While we have always had policies in place to protect children, we felt the opportunity to work with ChildSafe International was extremely valuable in ensuring we do everything we can.”

“This is one of many initiatives Baby Elephant is undertaking to become a leader in sustainable boutique hotels,” Carmel says. “We believe in responsible tourism, equitable employment, sustainable environment and ethical development.”

It is estimated that 26% of Cambodia’s adult population is illiterate and 18.6% of the population live below the international poverty line of US$1.25/day. The lives of children in Cambodia are also challenging with 36.1% of children working as child labour and 31.4% of children receiving inadequate care. Cambodia is a source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking. (Statistics from SHERescueHome).

Baby Elephant hotel manager Ravy Loch, a young Cambodian who transitioned from living in a rural village into a Buddhist pagoda before working his way into a career in hospitality and tourism, says it’s great that the team now know extra tasks they can do to help children.

“We learnt a lot from the training. It is related to how to help the kids when they need us. And the certificates have been fantastic for our team spirit,” Ravy said.
